Pranayama
with Joni Wellness and Jay Stewart
The simple act of breathing is something we perform several times a minute every day of our lives. Breathing is basic to life from a baby’s first cry to “breathing your last.” Yet – how simple is breathing and are we really accomplished at it after all that practice?
The most basic definition of the Yogic practice of pranayama is the rhythmic control of breath. In the spectrum of Yoga, it follows the physical practice of asanas and is the beginning of the inward journey of yoga. At the most accomplished level, it allows the practitioner to control the energies of the physical body.
The benefits of pranayama include better respiratory health, the ability to calm the mind and body and achieve a meditative state as the practitioner moves from gross to subtle. Pranayama practice maintains the health of all body systems and encourages a more balanced integration of body, mind and breath.
This course will be taught for those who have completed at least six months of asana classes and will encompass the following topics:
-
Breathing awareness
-
The anatomy of breathing
-
Positioning yourself for breathing
-
Basic supine pranayama technique
-
